Tab Smartphone Crossover

Samsung has added another smartphone to its Galaxy Series called Samsung Galaxy Note. Galaxy Note is much different than other phones, as it provides a 5.3 inch screen. The debate however still stands whether this phone is too big for a regular phone or too small for a tablet phone. Dell had launched a similar smartphone with a 5 inch screen called as Streak 5. Due to negative responses Dell stopped its production. Whether Galaxy Note will be any different or not we will have to wait and see.

Specifications of Galaxy Note

Check out the technical specifications of this crossover gadget.

  • 5.3 inch screen
  • Dual Core 1.4 GHz
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 Megapixel back camera and 2 Megapixel front camera
  • 16 GB or 32 GB storage
  • 9.65 mm thickness

Stylus – S Pen

Samsung Galaxy Note has also added the option of using a stylus called as S Pen. The S Pen was previously seen with HTC Flyer. The difference between with S Pen and stylus is that, the S pen comes with built in apps like taking notes, calendar, to-do things etc. Many other companies are also going to launch apps for the S pen.

iOS 5 Beta Version Released For Your Iphone

Apple has recently released a beta version of iOS 5. ‘iOS 5′ will run on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod Touch (3rd and 4th generation). The operating system that was first released in 2007, hopes to attract customers by introducing new features in the 5th edition. Apple claims that they have added 200 new features in the new operating system and are planning to release the full iOS 5 in fall of 2011. It is very unlikely that a person will use all the new features, but here is a list of top 3 features that you will use for sure.

Notification Center

Notifications such as messages, e-mails, reminders, friend requests, etc will now be displayed at the top of the screen and can be displayed by swiping down the notification area. The notification will also appear when the phone is locked and will require only swipe down process to view it. Whenever a new notification appears, it will appear on the top of the screen and will also disappear automatically such that the users are not interrupted in their current task.

Wi-Fi Synchronization

Now you don’t need a computer to sync your iPad, iPhone or iTouch. You can directly connect to the internet through Wi-Fi and start using the gadget. This synchronization feature is an attempt to replace PCs and laptops to iPads. Honestly, this is actually quite possible as iPad does have all the necessary requirements those fulfilled by PCs and Laptops.

Newsstand

Now you can directly buy magazines from this new feature called Newsstand. E-books are extensively used in iPads and the Newsstand will definitely bring out some major daily sales.

From the Company Sources

Whitman believes by releasing the operating system’s code openly, improvements can be made by coders throughout the world. Whitman has also said that by making the WebOS open source we are trying to harness the power of community. According to her once WebOS reaches its true potential it can be an alternative to other operating systems.

WebOS – Getting New Life

Previously HP had announced that they will come up with their own operating system WebOS and will start using it in smartphones and tablets. The Testing Phase

It’s actually in the testing phase; so the developers are testing it further just to make sure it is delivered in the best manner. Users who have been using a single core processor, this update is going to come as a surprise package for all of them and surely, it will boost their hopes as well.

ICS Upgrade for other Handsets

Google confirms 10 billionth Android app download

Google's hugely successful mobile operating system Android has hit a new milestone with the iOS rival confirmed to have surpassed 10 billion app downloads through the Android Market.

Continuing to expand at a staggering rate Google made the announcement via its official blog stating that the smartphone and tablet platform is now racking up a massive one billion app downloads per month despite having taken 22 months to secure its first billion downloads.

Android App Sales

Still looking to catch Apple which revealed earlier in the year that its iPhone, iPod and iPad servicing App Store had reached 15 billion downloads, Google’s Android offering is growing at an expansive rate with the open system included on a wide variety of devices from the market leading smartphone powerhouse that is the Samsung Galaxy S II to budget handsets and questionable tablets.

"Apple announced the 15 billion download mark in July so it's clear that Android's momentum in device activations is translating to application downloads and usage," Geoff Blaber, an analyst with CCS Insight said.

Looking to answer the question being posed by many he added: "We'd expect Android to overtake Apple in application downloads in the first half of 2012."

Cheap Android Apps

To celebrate its 10 billionth Android app download Google has revealed that for 10 days it will be offering a host of key and premium apps for just 10 pence each. Whilst this might be a simply way for the Android platform to rocket to its next billion downloads, anything to save us a few pennies is warmly welcomed.

Angry Birds Advent Challenge officially announced

Further to last week's exclusive on Rovio's festive plans for Angry Birds, the mobile media company has announced all the official details. Fans of the flingable feathery fowls can enjoy 25 Winter Wonderland-themed levels over the Christmas period, as well as a special festive challenge on December 5th.

The magic fifth level is exclusive to the Chrome version of the game and presents fans with access to a special festive microsite. Rovio has teamed up with Samsung to give fans the opportunity – via this microsite – to win a selection of Samsung Galaxy Mobile devices as well as giving them access to loads of other content such as videos, holiday e-cards and of course the Angry Birds advent challenge.

“The holiday season is all about giving back and giving thanks, and this year we wanted to thank our millions of fans by giving them some great Angry Birds experiences,” said Rovio’s CMO, Peter Vesterbacka. “Not only are they receiving 25 new levels in our Advent game, but they’re also getting a chance to win the best Samsung products around and participate in a fun advent challenge.”

YH Lee, SVP of Global Marketing at Samsung Mobile Communications Business was also positive about the collaboration, saying, “It’s so good to team up with Rovio again. Samsung has had a brilliant year and our Galaxy devices are popular all over the world, so to be able to launch a holiday experience inside the most popular mobile game in the world, is awesome!"

Google now testing Ice Cream Sandwich internally

This process, known as dogfooding, is a common way of testing software before a public release. Naturally this has set tongues wagging, and we're expecting the latest build of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, to become widely available to the public fairly imminently.

The news comes courtesy of Google's AdSense policy applications and signals developer Adel Saoud who posted this earlier today:

"Just got Ice-cream Sandwich update on my Nexus S & it's looking great :)".

He went on to say that, "...it's an early one for Google employees so we test it further so it's even more awesome when you guys get it. So sadly I can't comment on it more at this time..."

The posts were taken down fairly quickly, but not before they'd been well circulated on Google+ and other websites.

We'll have our fingers crossed that this means we'll be seeing Android Ice Cream Sandwich sooner rather than later, but it could still potentially be a number of months before anyone outside of Google gets their hands on the highly anticipated OS.

Angry Birds Cookbook and Robin Williams Siri

We have another look at some of the weirder stories that graced the internet over the past 7 days that you probably didn’t see.

Angry Birds Cookbook
While most of us search for cookbooks by the likes of our favourite celebrity chefs Rovio Entertainment, creators of 'Angry Birds' has unleashed a cookbook of their very own. Call it crazy or just clever marketing, only the number of sales will tell. Angry birds have racked up quite a fan base and may well become a huge hit. Watch out Gordon Ramsey, looks as if there'san angrier chef than you in town.

Nokia N8 Shooting Feature film
At some point or another we have all used our mobile phones to do some form of amateur filming. Imagine shooting a feature film? Well that is what a team of independent directors have done using the Nokia N8. They want the film to appear in theaters across America and it looks like they might just get their wish.

Nasa puts a washing machine in space
Who ever thought that space cowboys didn't change their underwear? It’s not really something that one thinks about, but apparently NASA has commissioned a small disinfectant company UMPQUA to create a washing machine so that astronauts can wash their dirty smalls while in space.

Clever Glasses
In Japan Professor Kuniyoshi took years to perfect the ultimate pair of glasses, which according to the grapevine allows you to find item’s that you have lost. You tell the glasses what’s missing and it will play into your eye the last time you saw the item. I think somebody has been watching too much Terminator. What we want to know is, what happens when you lose the glasses?

£12,000 Telephone Number
Usually when one goes to purchase a mobile phone, you don’t pay more for the number than you do your handset. A mobile telephone number in Bahrain is on sale for $19,000 around £12,135, because of, none other than err the aesthetics. Maybe if the buyer puts the numbers on the lottery they can win the money back.

Defibrillator Toaster
Defibrillators are used to revive people right? Well it seems that an industrial designer has came up with a crazy idea to make toast using one of these things. I wonder if they have a similar device if your steak is too rare?

Treat Yourself to an Android Ice Cream Sandwich

The Android OS treats keep on coming. After a year or so of Honeycomb tweaks, Google has finally unveiled the specifics of their new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, officially dubbed Android 4.0. The previous evolutionary stages of Android have been slow and steady shifts into a more streamlined system, better imitative of it’s main competitor iOS, but ICS is introducing innovation as much as adjustment. The new Android operating system will make its debut on Google’s latest phone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, sometime in November, with additional models and even prepaid phones carrying the OS being released sometime after the start of the new year

New aspects of Android include:

NEW AND IMPROVED CAMERA ATTRIBUTES

The Android camera and camcorder apps are set to see some serious changes. Now, users can use the camera as a face recognition lock for their devices. They can also take panoramic portraits and snap multiple shots at once. With the camcorder, multiple video chatterers standing at different focal lengths will be focused in on independently, depending on who is doing the talking.

TABLET INSPIRATIONS

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the first version of Android designed to work for both smartphones and tablet computers. What this means is that you are essentially getting a tablet OS put onto your cell phone. Widgets can be manipulated with a wider range of customization, while icon size can be adjusted as well. Those with matching Android smartphones and tablets carrying ICS will experience a much more streamlined transition of data and media.

ANDROID BEAM

The most exciting newfangled feature is Android Beam, which allows two Android-powered devices to exchange contact information, media, and even certain apps, just by hovering the devices near one another. The transitional data even includes maps and directions. It’s an addition that’s certain to impress new and experienced Android users alike.

Just in time for the holiday season, Google is about to unleash a whole bunch of goodies onto mobile device users. The sample tastes sure make getting the update a tempting proposition, but whether consumers can handle the extra cash involved in getting a new device to handle the calories remains to be seen.

Tiny USB Stick Brings Android to PCs, TVs

Google has made no secret about its plans for Android. Smartphones and tablets are just the beginning — the company wants Android everywhere. And thanks to FXI Technologies’ Cotton Candy USB device, we may not have to wait long to see Android on more than just our mobile devices.

FXI essentially built an ultra-lean computer inside a small USB stick. Stick it into any device that supports USB storage, and Cotton Candy will register as a USB drive. From there, you can run the Android OS in a secure environment inside your desktop, courtesy of a Windows/OSX/Linux-compatible virtualization client embedded in the device.

Stick Cotton Candy into a computer, and Android will appear in a virtualized window on your desktop. But get this: The USB key also features an HDMI connector. This way, you can connect the stick to your TV and use Android on the big screen (though you’ll need some kind of secondary input device, like a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo, to get anything done.)

Cotton Candy is far more than just Android on a stick. Under its Hot Wheels-sized hood, the device sports a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9-based processor (the same basic processor architecture you’ll find in the fastest chips from Apple and Nvidia), as well as ARM’s quad-core Mali GPU and 1GB of RAM. It’s an impressive laundry list of specs, and seems more than capable of fueling Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, the version of the OS that comes on the device.

From TVs to car stereo head units to refrigerators and lighting fixtures, it seems no piece of consumer electronics is out of Android’s reach. And, ultimately, getting Android on as many devices as possible gets Google’s search bar and services onto multitudinous screens beyond the desktop environment. This potentially means more ads served, and more revenue for the search company’s core business.

Android has already appeared is a small number of refrigerators, TVs and automobiles, and if widely adopted in the greater gadgetsphere, app-makers could make better, appliance-specific Android apps.

For now, the Cotton Candy USB stick is a stopgap item — a small taste of what Android can be before it bursts outside its mobile boundaries. Unfortunately, since it’s not a proper Android device per se — i.e., it doesn’t comply with enough of Google’s requirements to be considered “official” — you’ll be unable to access the Android Market from the device. Sideloading is still an option, though, so you won’t be left completely app-less.

Expect Cotton Candy to pop up for less than $200 around mid-2012.

RIM-Google Combined Initiative

It was stated that RIM would sign a contract with Google’s 250,000 apps and it was later confirmed by RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis. Popular software maker Myriad demonstrated Alien Dalvik software according to which, Android apps can easily run on other platforms. Now, users will see the new features in Blackberry’s forthcoming mobile phones which would entirely be based on a new operating system called QNX.

Get ready to explore new Blackberry OS

According to some sources, someone in Waterloo., Ontario has been running ShopSavvy on various Blackberry gadgets. As per the firm, the 8300, 8600 and 8520 models were found running ShopSavy this year. The best part is; incorporating Android apps would not be difficult since Blackberry OS can support Java Virtual Machines which is pretty amazing. But it is still a major question as whether all QNX phones will Android apps or not.

Nokia Windows 8 tablet to hit the markets in June of 2012

It is true that Nokia is counted amongst the largest manufacturers and shippers of cell phones around the globe but at the same time, it is known for low and average level phones which do not make much profit to the company like smartphones do.

Android 4.0 for all models of Sony Ericsson Xperia from 2011

Sony Ericsson promises to update the entire range of Xperia handsets launched in 2011 in Android 4.0 platform
Sony Ericsson phones list included in the program contains models like Xperia Arc, Xperia Arc S, Xperia Ray, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Neo V, Xperia Pro, Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro.

Update packages will arrive soon perhaps, the exact date varies depending on the model, but not earlier than November.

Sony Ericsson has issued similar news and shortly after the announcement of the Xperia phone line for 2011, but then it was updated to version 2.3.4 of Android Gingerbread platform.

Ice Cream Sandwich promises to be the first truly universal version of the Google Android operating system, scalable to a wide range of devices, from compact smartphone models and up to the big screen tablets.

Among the features discovered so far in Android 4.0 includes a face recognition and support for selective focus camera, activated by voice recognition function. Improvements list is of course much higher but remain a well guarded secret until the big launch.

On the long list of phones in the new program, we can only appreciate the effort of Sony Ericsson to maintain range of smartphone to date with the latest releases in software. The gesture was sure to be appreciated both for current customers and those who preferred to wait until 2012 for the newest smartphone offer.

China creates supercomputer with its own microprocessor

Previously, China stunned the world when it announced Tianhe-1A, the world fastest supercomputer which beat the US ‘Jaguar’ supercomputer by almost a mighty 0.8 petaflops or 800 trillion floating point calculations per second. Now, the communist country announced a new supercomputer which didn’t beat the Tianhe-1A but is nonetheless significant. This new supercomputer is called Sunway BlueLight MPP supercomputer.

What is interesting about Sunway is that none of the microprocessor in it is done by major companies such as Intel or AMD but rather its own microprocessors developed by the Chinese themselves. To compare, the Tianhe-1A uses a combination of Intel Xeon CPU and NVIDIA GPU. With this, it means that the Chinese are one step closer to compete with major markets and potentially be a competitor to the giants Intel and AMD.

The rate on which China is catching up technologically is alarmingly fast. It took 20 years for the microprocessors in the US to be what they are today but experts predict that the same will not be said with China. The microprocessors will be available not only for supercomputers but also for normal usage such as on a desktop or laptop. Should it be available en masse, expect a lot of computers to run on these microprocessors as well. Source : http://www.newgadget.org
