BBC iPlayer arrives, brings 3G viewing

BBC has finally launched its iPlayer app for the iPhone and iPod touch and in doing so announced that iOS viewers can now catch-up on programming over 3G connections.

The iPhone app, which has been strangely absent from the Beeb's mobile line-up since it launched on iPad and Android earlier this year, coincides with the launch of BBC's Global iPlayer app for smaller screen devices.

The BBC also revealed that iPad 3G owners can also watch shows over their 3G connection, which negates the need to download shows over Wi-Fi before heading away from a wireless connection. Android phone owners are still tied to Wi-Fi for now.

iPad owners can now send shows straight to their Apple TV device via AirPlay, which is great news as it gives custodians of Apple's hockey puck-sized set-top box a virtual iPlayer app too.

The iPhone version of the app brings some minor changes, including a neat channel switcher which allows viewers to flick between the BBC's TV and Radio channels.

Google confirms 10 billionth Android app download

Google's hugely successful mobile operating system Android has hit a new milestone with the iOS rival confirmed to have surpassed 10 billion app downloads through the Android Market.

Continuing to expand at a staggering rate Google made the announcement via its official blog stating that the smartphone and tablet platform is now racking up a massive one billion app downloads per month despite having taken 22 months to secure its first billion downloads.

Android App Sales

Still looking to catch Apple which revealed earlier in the year that its iPhone, iPod and iPad servicing App Store had reached 15 billion downloads, Google’s Android offering is growing at an expansive rate with the open system included on a wide variety of devices from the market leading smartphone powerhouse that is the Samsung Galaxy S II to budget handsets and questionable tablets.

"Apple announced the 15 billion download mark in July so it's clear that Android's momentum in device activations is translating to application downloads and usage," Geoff Blaber, an analyst with CCS Insight said.

Looking to answer the question being posed by many he added: "We'd expect Android to overtake Apple in application downloads in the first half of 2012."

Cheap Android Apps

To celebrate its 10 billionth Android app download Google has revealed that for 10 days it will be offering a host of key and premium apps for just 10 pence each. Whilst this might be a simply way for the Android platform to rocket to its next billion downloads, anything to save us a few pennies is warmly welcomed.

Lovefilm drops support for Flash for Silverlight

UK film provider, Lovefilm, has decided to convert to Microsoft's Silverlight over Adobe's Flash, with security reasons being cited as the reason for the change.

It published a blog post earlier this week explaining the cause for the shift. Paul Thompson, streaming project manager for Lovefilm said: "We’ve been asked to make this change by the Studios who provide us with the films in the first place, because they’re insisting – understandably – that we use robust security to protect their films from piracy, and they see the Silverlight software as more secure than Flash."

Thompson explained that without making the shift, the firm would not have very many films available to stream. It also confirmed that the change will not affect any of its streaming devices including PS3, iPad, internet TVs, but will be a matter of change for PCs, laptops and Macs.

However, those using Linux systems, or older Macs using non-Intel chips will not be able to access the service.

Lovefilm said HTML5 was cast aside as a consideration as it is an open-source option that did not have sufficient security the studios would have been happy with.

Thompson said Silverlight's advantage was that it possesses a technology called Smooth Streaming which automatically adjusts the quality of the video stream according to the user's internet connection. "This reduces buffering for customers on a low broadband speed, but then improves the streaming quality when broadband speed increases," he added.

The firm will continue to run Flash alongside Silverlight until the first week of January 2012, giving users time to make the switch to the newer technology.

second most popular browser : Chrome surpasses Firefox

In the browser wars, Google Chrome has moved ahead of Mozilla Firefox, with a 25.7% share in the market, compared to 25.2% of Firefox's share, according to StatCounter.

Chrome has been in the market for three years and it still trailing behind Internet Explorer, which has a share of 40.6% of the market.

"We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally," said Aodhan Cullen, chief executive of StatCounter.

Cullen said the firm's stats measure actual browser usage, not just downloads of the browser, which shows that people are using it to access the internet.

Chrome had already passed by Firefox in Britain in August, but still stands behind it in the US.

Facebook 63,206 status character allowance introduced

Facebook has drastically increased the number of characters users can utilise to express themselves in profile status rants with the former 5,000 character limit being plumped to a hefty 63,206 upper bracket.

Launching with a Twitter-esque and SMS friendly 160 character limit, Facebook's status limitations have been repeatedly increased with the longstanding 500 character cap being upped to 5,000 in March of this year.

"You can now write posts with more than 60,000 characters, including status, group and wall posts," an official statement from Facebook read on the decision.

"For reference, a novel has roughly 500,000 characters. This could be shared in nine posts."

Whilst Facebook has yet to officially confirm the reasoning behind the rather precise 63,206 character cap, the increase sees the world's largest social network still fall short of the recently launched Google+ and its 100,000 character limit.

Will you ever find the need to make use of this character allowance increase? Let us know via the comments box below.

In case you were wondering this whole article used just 946 characters.

MovieGoer captures post-film joy/despair

A new movie application for iPhone aims to capture your raw, post-screening emotions by allowing you to record and upload a 15-second video review when you leave the cinema.

The MovieGoer app for iPad adds a more social element to existing showtime listing offerings like Movies by Flixster as you can book yourself into screenings and follow your favourite movie theatre.

The idea is that you create your own circle end up going to more shows with your friends.

The app features all of the traditional local listings and showtimes as well as a host of trailers, cast and crew information as well as critical ratings and reviews.

The coolest feature is undoubtedly the ability to record an instant, 15-second video review as you leave the screening. What we love about this is the range of emotions that it's likely to capture when the feelings of exhilaration or out-and-out devastation are at their peak.

In those few seconds after you emerge from the darkness, there's no opportunity to make a considered judgement, dampen your excitement or allow your cynical buddies to get into your ear. It's visceral, it's organic and it should be a barrel of laughs.

This feature alone surely makes this free app worth a download?

Spotify App platform All you need to know

It's been a busy few months for the streaming music service. Spotify finally launched in the US, and has found its way onto the Boxee Box, Logitech devices and is set to land on Virgin Media Tivo boxes in the not too distant future as well. So what's next in the world of Spotify? Well, all was revealed today at a press conference in New York where we got first glimpse at the new Spotify app platform.

Spotify app development

Third party developers will be able to build HTML 5 apps that sit within the Spotify desktop application using what the company calls an easy to use Java script API. So it is likely that we will see apps not too different from the ones you can currently find on Facebook.

Spotify app approval

Just as Apple acts as regulator on its App Store, Spotify will similarly approve applications before opening them out to the public which should help minimize any potential security risks.

Spotify apps

With around 30 applications set to be unveiled at launch, we got our first look at the Rolling Stone app which will bring features such as editorial picks and artist playlists that will be playable through the app. Other notable apps include last.fm which beings integrated lyrics to Spotify, and Songkick concerts which makes recommendations of shows to go to based on your Spotify music collection.

Spotify apps pricing

Spotify revealed that apps will be free of charge and that they have no plans to charge as things stand at the moment. The good news is that the new integrated apps will be available for both Spotify Free and Spotify Premium users.

Spotify apps UK release date

No details were revealed as to when Spotify apps will launch in the UK or any territory for that matter, but users will be able to get a preview of the beta version of the Spotify app platform later today by clicking on the following link: www.spotify.com/us/download/previews

China creates supercomputer with its own microprocessor

Previously, China stunned the world when it announced Tianhe-1A, the world fastest supercomputer which beat the US ‘Jaguar’ supercomputer by almost a mighty 0.8 petaflops or 800 trillion floating point calculations per second. Now, the communist country announced a new supercomputer which didn’t beat the Tianhe-1A but is nonetheless significant. This new supercomputer is called Sunway BlueLight MPP supercomputer.

What is interesting about Sunway is that none of the microprocessor in it is done by major companies such as Intel or AMD but rather its own microprocessors developed by the Chinese themselves. To compare, the Tianhe-1A uses a combination of Intel Xeon CPU and NVIDIA GPU. With this, it means that the Chinese are one step closer to compete with major markets and potentially be a competitor to the giants Intel and AMD.

The rate on which China is catching up technologically is alarmingly fast. It took 20 years for the microprocessors in the US to be what they are today but experts predict that the same will not be said with China. The microprocessors will be available not only for supercomputers but also for normal usage such as on a desktop or laptop. Should it be available en masse, expect a lot of computers to run on these microprocessors as well. Source : http://www.newgadget.org

RIM giving away free apps as compensation for outage

the company behind the fading Blackberry devices are giving away a handful of application worth almost $100 as compensation for the Blackberry service outage that had rendered a lot of the devices all around the world useless for quite some time. Some of the applications that are being given away include SIMS 3, Shazam Encore and many more. There is no telling how much the company is losing due to the compensation as well as the outage.

The timing for the outage couldn’t even be more troublesome for the company as the Apple iPhone 4S was scheduled to be released at the same week on which the outage happened. The outage definitely gave the people at RIM a PR nightmare as people all around the world criticized the company heavily. The places affected by the outage spanned all across the globe as users not only from the United States that were affected but also in parts of Asia, Europe, South America and many more.

RIM was once a dominant name in the mobile industry but now the company is slowly losing fans because of competing companies such as Google and Apple, two giants that are now slowly gaining shares that was once RIM’s.

The Hottest Apps of 2011, Week 12!

Internet Explorer 9. Interest in Microsoft’s latest web browser (abbreviated as IE9) has picked up due to last week’s list. Again, IE9 promises faster loading times and better support for web standards—which should cover two complaints about earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Read: Every Version of Internet Explorer Acid Tested and IE9: 2.35 Million Downloads on Day One.

WebM for IE9. The WebM Project seeks to create an open online video format based on HTML5, a relatively new technology supported by newer versions of Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera. WebM for IE9 is one of the first extensions for the ninth incarnation of Microsoft’s web browser.

Glary Utilities. Here’s an “award winning” app that’s actually several in one. Glary Utilities promises a faster Windows experience. The utility features a registry cleaner, anti-spyware and -malware functionality, a database on how to fix certain application errors, and much more.

Sync Allway. There are numerous services that promise seamless syncing between your online account, computers, mobile devices, and anything else that can store data. Sync Allway lets you take a homebrew approach, turning your Windows PC into a synchronization control panel that supports desktops, laptops, USB drives, remote servers (FTP/SFTP), and online data storage services.

Dictionary.NET. It’s no surprise that you can download a dictionary app for your PC, especially one the relies on Google Translate for lingual conversions. Dictionary.NET works as advertised, with complete definitions and word etymologies for words both ancient and new. The only caveat with Dictionary.NET is that it needs to be online to accomplish anything useful.
Staff Picks

SpeedFan. Computer hardware enthusiasts swear by this utility. It shows real-time data on CPU voltage, fan speed, hardware temperatures, HDD recovery data (S.M.A.R.T.) and other information that overclockers and other computer pros rely on in the quest for the ultimate rig.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition. The numerous anti-spyware and -malware offerings available online is a welcome trend. SUPERAntiSpyware attempts to stand out not through its cheesy name, but its thorough examination of a system booting up or shutting down. Like any other app in its genre, SUPERAntiSpyware regularly checks for and downloads updates.

Adobe Photoshop Express. You’re probably familiar with the desktop version of the scaled-down variant of Adobe’s main cash cow. But the app linked here is actually for the iOS. It promises comprehensive image editing tools, all controlled through the iOS intuitive multi-touch interface. All work can be synced with an online Photoshop.com account.

Songbird for Android. Few apps allow Android users complete control over their Android device’s media collection. Yet Songbird provides exactly that. No matter where your files are located on your pocket gadget (or how you placed them there), Songbird makes it easy to sort songs into playlists and control playback through a minimalist interface. Users can even set a song as their phone’s ringtone and easily configure Bluetooth headsets for a wireless listening experience.

Facebook for Android. It’s Facebook for Android. What else would you need to know? The app provides most of what’ll found on your desktop browser, redirecting users to a touchscreen-friendly version of the popular social networking service for what it can’t provide (touch.facebook.com). A glaring omission: no chat feature. But the new way Facebook handles messages should address this shortcoming somewhat.(tom's hardware)
