Continuing to expand at a staggering rate Google made the announcement via its official blog stating that the smartphone and tablet platform is now racking up a massive one billion app downloads per month despite having taken 22 months to secure its first billion downloads.

Still looking to catch Apple which revealed earlier in the year that its iPhone, iPod and iPad servicing App Store had reached 15 billion downloads, Google’s Android offering is growing at an expansive rate with the open system included on a wide variety of devices from the market leading smartphone powerhouse that is the Samsung Galaxy S II to budget handsets and questionable tablets.
"Apple announced the 15 billion download mark in July so it's clear that Android's momentum in device activations is translating to application downloads and usage," Geoff Blaber, an analyst with CCS Insight said.
Looking to answer the question being posed by many he added: "We'd expect Android to overtake Apple in application downloads in the first half of 2012."
Cheap Android Apps
To celebrate its 10 billionth Android app download Google has revealed that for 10 days it will be offering a host of key and premium apps for just 10 pence each. Whilst this might be a simply way for the Android platform to rocket to its next billion downloads, anything to save us a few pennies is warmly welcomed.
