Lovefilm drops support for Flash for Silverlight

UK film provider, Lovefilm, has decided to convert to Microsoft's Silverlight over Adobe's Flash, with security reasons being cited as the reason for the change.

It published a blog post earlier this week explaining the cause for the shift. Paul Thompson, streaming project manager for Lovefilm said: "We’ve been asked to make this change by the Studios who provide us with the films in the first place, because they’re insisting – understandably – that we use robust security to protect their films from piracy, and they see the Silverlight software as more secure than Flash."

Thompson explained that without making the shift, the firm would not have very many films available to stream. It also confirmed that the change will not affect any of its streaming devices including PS3, iPad, internet TVs, but will be a matter of change for PCs, laptops and Macs.

However, those using Linux systems, or older Macs using non-Intel chips will not be able to access the service.

Lovefilm said HTML5 was cast aside as a consideration as it is an open-source option that did not have sufficient security the studios would have been happy with.

Thompson said Silverlight's advantage was that it possesses a technology called Smooth Streaming which automatically adjusts the quality of the video stream according to the user's internet connection. "This reduces buffering for customers on a low broadband speed, but then improves the streaming quality when broadband speed increases," he added.

The firm will continue to run Flash alongside Silverlight until the first week of January 2012, giving users time to make the switch to the newer technology.

Spotify App platform All you need to know

It's been a busy few months for the streaming music service. Spotify finally launched in the US, and has found its way onto the Boxee Box, Logitech devices and is set to land on Virgin Media Tivo boxes in the not too distant future as well. So what's next in the world of Spotify? Well, all was revealed today at a press conference in New York where we got first glimpse at the new Spotify app platform.

Set to be integrated into the Spotify desktop application, the Swedish-based company hopes this will increase its active user base beyond the already impressive 10 million mark by introducing a new way of discovering music. To give you an idea of what to expect, here's our guide to Spotify apps

Spotify app development

Third party developers will be able to build HTML 5 apps that sit within the Spotify desktop application using what the company calls an easy to use Java script API. So it is likely that we will see apps not too different from the ones you can currently find on Facebook.

Spotify app approval

Just as Apple acts as regulator on its App Store, Spotify will similarly approve applications before opening them out to the public which should help minimize any potential security risks.

Spotify apps

With around 30 applications set to be unveiled at launch, we got our first look at the Rolling Stone app which will bring features such as editorial picks and artist playlists that will be playable through the app. Other notable apps include last.fm which beings integrated lyrics to Spotify, and Songkick concerts which makes recommendations of shows to go to based on your Spotify music collection.

Spotify apps pricing

Spotify revealed that apps will be free of charge and that they have no plans to charge as things stand at the moment. The good news is that the new integrated apps will be available for both Spotify Free and Spotify Premium users.

Spotify apps UK release date

No details were revealed as to when Spotify apps will launch in the UK or any territory for that matter, but users will be able to get a preview of the beta version of the Spotify app platform later today by clicking on the following link: www.spotify.com/us/download/previews

Android film rentals now available in the UK

Google's film rental service for Android has made its way to the UK, with Brits now able to borrow films from the Android Market.

Over 1,000 movies are available to rent in the Video app with prices starting from £2.49 a pop. New titles like Hanna are available alongside older movies including Monty Python's The Meaning of Life and that 2008 classic Vampire in Vegas.

When you rent a film, you can watch it any time within 30 days of purchase, with 48 hours to play with once you've hit play.

Android: The Movie
The service has been up and running in the US for some time now, but Google has been making a concerted effort to bring its media products over to the UK of late; Google Books has finally launched on our fair shores, and Music By Google is unlikely to be far behind.

You can also rent movies from Google-owned YouTube in the UK, a service that is also compatible with Android handsets and Google TV – it's not yet clear if the two services' film libraries are the same.

One company that will be pleased to see Google's film offerings proliferating across more devices is Miramax, which recently said it is hoping to work closely with Google for digital distribution.

Other options for the mobile film viewing public include Facebook, where you can rent Warner Bros and Miramax movies for a small fee, while iOS users can turn to the LoveFilm iPad app to stream films from the web.

Download Good Charlotte The Young And The Hopeless

For its second outing THE YOUNG AND THE HOPELESS, Good Charlotte gives any notion of a sophomore jinx a combative boot to the side of the head thanks to an abundance of chanting choruses and choppy guitar riffs. Like standard-bearers Blink-182, this Maryland quartet frolics in a land of teen angst peppered with snarky optimism that comes across best within the margins of the rebellious "Anthem," rambunctious "Riot Girl" (no doubt a cousin of the Dead Milkmen's "Punk Rock Girl"), and Green Day-flavored title cut.

Balancing out rambunctious fare like the Iggy Pop-inspired "Lifestyles Of The Rich & Famous" and the chuggin "Movin' On" is such tasty fare as the soul-baring "Emotionless" and Social Distortion-like "The Day I Die." With THE YOUNG AND THE HOPELESS, Good Charlotte takes the next step towards pop-punk world domination.
