Acer Aspire S3 is an ultraportable budget, to those who want to enjoy the new Intel vision for portable computers, but lack the budget necessary to purchase a model equipped as Asus UX21.
Description
Being addressed to the mainstream market, Aspire S3 we not amaze us with stellar performance of a next-generation SSD or polished aluminum finish with brilliant magnesium, but retains the defining features of the new ultrabook range: next-generation of Intel platform, the construction is highly flexible and weight reduced.
Despite the budget, Aspire S3 is a very presentable ultrabook with a neat design, quality finishes smooth and satisfying. The casing is made of silver plastic with a slightly rough texture to the touch. Just the back of the screen is covered with polished aluminum panel designed to provide a special view.
The chiclet type keyboard is quiet and equipped with keys that have a short race to touch, according to depreciation shocks that occurred during typing.
The touchpad is large enough for comfortable use, but construction could be better. The two keys for the left/right click are hidden under the touchpad and are a little awkward to press.
Its 13.3-inch diagonal screen does not excel in the angles of visibility, but brightness and image quality are at least reasonable.
For reasons of space, the two stereo speakers are not in the traditional location – just below the screen above the keyboard. They were moved to the back of the case, as restpad. The orientation for the two sides of the case and not to the user face is still an inspired choice, because it allows obtaining a better quality stereo effect.
The constraints of very thin cases have severely limited the connectivity options. Thus, you canc see a card reader on the right and on the left the headphone.
Performance
Acer Aspire S3 is no better than the experience of a normal size laptop, a configuration based on latest generation. Proof for this is the score of 5783 points obtained in PCMark Vantage, considerably higher than obtained with a different-size laptop, Sony VAIO CA, model equipped with a 2.1GHz dual-core processor, but without HyperThreading support.
In conclusion, the frequency at only 1.6 GHz at which works the processor Intel Core i5-2467M should not be a concern for anyone, it demonstrated a sufficient reserve of power for most common applications. Moreover, on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit you can run comfortable some of the best applications, despite the fact that have available only a common hard drive with 320GB capacity. True configuration includes a solid state of storage device, but its capacity is limited to 20 GB.
Helped only integrated graphical user interface included in the Core i5 processor, the Aspire S3 is suitable for multimedia activities such as watching movies and less PC games.
Autonomy
Acer Aspire S3 contains a rechargeable Li-Ion 3260 mAh, irremovable.
Even with this seemingly modest battery, the Aspire S3 managed to withstand 3 hours and 20 minutes, according to the playback of a 720p-resolution video with disabled network card and the screen brightness reduced to 50%.
If you prefer to surf the Internet to connect to a wireless network, the Aspire S3 promises mobility for more than 4 hours, provided the use of Battery Saving profile for energy management.
