3D review : Battlefield 3

3D technology

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a new PC to run Battlefield 3 in 3D… but it helps. NVIDIA’s new 3D Vision 2 kit is actually relatively cheap at £149 for pair of active shutter glasses and an IR receiver. The glasses are bigger, more comfortable and block out more back ground ambient light. But the deal clincher is hooking the glasses up with a flat panel that supports the new super-bright Lightboost tech.

We used the 27-inch Asus VG278H, which costs £565, has a HD LED display, a 120Hz refresh rate to cope with NVIDIA’s 3D tech and a speedy 2ms response time. It also has a 3D HDMI 1.4 input and a Dual-link DVI input.

We were lucky enough to have an NVIDIA white box system with 6GB, Intel’s flagship core i7 processor and with two GeForce GTX 580 cards hooked up in SLI mode.

3D performance

The legacy of being built in a PC means Battlefield 3 has more settings than you could shake a stick at. That means, you can still play in 3D on a lower specced system by turning down one of the many graphical bells and whistles in the options menu.

As we said, we were lucky to go to war on a brilliant system and gamed in 3D with everything set on ultra. 3D can absolutely kill a system. Jargon aside, in effect you are running the game twice simultaneously when you press the CRTL then T button so it will take out lesser PCs. But we managed to maintain over 48FPS for smooth HD playback and that’s on servers with 64 players running about at the same time. The only time we suffered any staccato playback was a server issue rather than a problem with the hardware.

Obviously the 3D is given an incredible boost by playing with the effects setting on ultra because the added debris, smoke and explosions are rendered with much more dimensional panache. With the best audio we’ve heard in any title this year, the effect can be disorientating – in a good way. We also played with the 3D slider at fill tilt and had no headaches to report after long sessions. We did experience minimal ghosting but that was easily rectified by turning the 3D down and we can vouch that the Lightboost tech is a big winning point for NVIDIA.

Verdict

As a game, Battlefield 3 didn't get five out of five stars in our review. There were too many issues with the weaker single player campaign and too many problems as a console venture. However, as a 3D PC experience it is an unqualified succeess and a five star product.

Now, with an added dimension, we’re saying you haven’t played Battlefield 3 unless you’ve played Battlefield 3 in 3D on a PC

Features, price & latest news Apple iPhone 5 Rumours

Fanboys may well be content with their current Apple smartphones of joy, but there are no doubt more than a few already looking to the future. Notably, an iPhone 5-shaped future.

Google's Android continues to find its way into more handsets by the day, and while no one will doubt the brilliance of the Apple smartphone, delivering the goods has perhaps never been more crucial.

Talk of the 'iPhone 5' has noticeably gathered momentum in recent months, and as we anticipate how Apple will change the smartphone game once again, we've rummaged through the speculation, 'trusted sources' and patents piecing together how the iPhone 5 could take shape.

One of the most significant developments in the appearance of the iPhone 5 is the news that 9to5mac have discovered evidence of the iPhone 5 existing in the coding of the new iOS 5.1 beta release.

Apple iPhone 5 to have 4-inch display?

While it's been reported below that the iPhone 5 is having displays built by Toshiba, there has been a new rumour from AppleInsider which suggests that in face Hitachi and Sony are making a 4-inch display, reportedly for a unspecified Apple device. Could this be the iPhone 5 or a brand-new iPod Touch? There's no confirmation either way but it certainly points towards Apple finally changing their screen size across the board.

Nikkei Business Daily announced last year that Toshiba was set to build a new factory in Ishikawa tasked with producing high-res LCD panels for Apple’s upcoming ranges of iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

The new Japanese based factory, set to cost 100 billion Yen (£757 million) and be constructed during 2011, will double Toshiba’s current monthly production capacity of 8.5 million units.

Part funded by Apple, the new factory will begin production this year with the Apple iPhone 5 expected to be one of the first devices catered for.

Apple iPhone 5: new design

The Wall Street Journal reported that its 'in-the-know' contact believes the iPhone 5 will feature a “different form factor”, adopting a brand new design following the antennagate issues that resulted in signal issues and dropped calls.

Since then Engadget has spoken to multiple sources who claim that a complete redesign of the handset body is on the cards and that the device is already being tested by staff at Apple HQ.

However, leaked designs and mold engineering images tell a different story, suggesting that the only aesthetic change for the iPhone 5 will be a larger display and smaller bezel.

Also on the cards for the iPhone 5 is an all-metal back, similar to that found on the original iPhone, reportedly in a bid to avoid the embarrassing antenna issues experienced on the iPhone 4.

The glass posterior of the iPhone 4 was also prone to unsightly cracks if treated roughly, and was rumoured to be the cause of the delay of the white model - a headache all round for Apple.

An Apple patent also points to the iPhone using smaller conductive nodes beneath the screen, allowing for the overall device to be slimmer. Tipped to also feature for the iPad 2, the new method could also use less power, giving you longer battery life from each charge of your iPhone 5.

Latest: The Wall Street Journal have once again claimed that the iPhone 5 will be “thinner and lighter” than previous models whilst sporting a widely expected 8-megapixel camera and September release date.

Quoting sources at component suppliers, WSJ suggest that in the midst of a legal battle with the Korean tech giant Apple’s next-generation smartphone will do away with the current breed of Samsung CPUs instead opting for a Qualcomm produced processor.

Apple iPhone 5: A5 processor and Qualcomm chips

The Wall Street Journal was again amongst the first to report that “people familiar with the matter” had confirmed the iPhone was to receive an overhauled chipset in order to contend with a rise in competitive high-end smartphones running versions of the Google Android operating system.

Apple is tipped to ditch the 1GHz A4 processor found inside the iPhone 4 for the dual-core A5 CPU.

Apple used the same A4 chip in its iPhone 4 as in its original iPad, so repeating this trick with the A5 chip like they have for the iPad 2, would see the iPhone 5 in line with upcoming dual-core processor powerhouses like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation.

On the wireless chipset providers front, Infineon may make way for Qualcomm, likely in a bid to avoid connectivity issues previously faced with the iPhone 4.

Apple iPhone 5: Near Field Communication (NFC)

The year so far has seen a slew of handsets with NFC such as the Galaxy Nexus S or the range of Nokia phones that have featured NFC, with these handsets proving the success of the technology analysts predict that the proportion of NFC phones will rise to 50 per cent by 2012.

The same analysts believes this will be because major manufacturers like Apple are planning to make a NFC-enabled iPhone 5.

Successfully trialed by 02 in 2008, the appearance of NFC in Google’s Android 2.3 update means it is likely to be on the radar for Apple as well.

Benjamin Vigier, Apple’s new Mobile Commerce Manager joined the Apple ranks last year with his CV showing a lot of experience in the NFC field, having helped Starbucks create a bardcode-based way of paying for your morning coffee and even setting up Paypal Mobile.

Apple has already filed a string of patents regarding NFC appearing on the iPhone, and Vigier’s appointment could well mean the iPhone 5 will see some of the action.

Its arrival would essentially mean turning your iPhone into a virtual credit card, allowing you to pay for everything from cake to clothes by waving your smartphone across a dedicated reader.

Apple iPhone 5: integrated SIM

To make purchasing your iPhone direct from Apple’s online or highstreet stores a much easier process, reports suggest that the iPhone 5 will include an integrated SIM to do just that.

Allowing Apple to assign networks to individual handsets at customer’s request, the integrated chip rumoured to feature on the next handset will carry subscriber identification information and ultimately see the end of the little plastic cards currently issued directly from network service providers.

With users able to pick a network provider at the point of sale, Apple could simply program the new device to that company’s service eliminating the need for shoppers to wait for networks to activate the handset or for the arrival of the corresponding SIM.

Microsoft to launch full Office suite for Apple's iPad tablet?

Microsoft looks set to openly embrace bitter rival Apple with new reports suggesting the PC giant is to bring the full Office suite to the Apple iPad in a selection of premium applications.

The reports, which come via iPad exclusive newspaper The Daily, have claimed Microsoft is ‘actively working’ on bringing Office to the iPad with the likes of Microsoft Word, Excell and Powerpoint to challenge Apple’s own branded Pages, Numbers and Keynote software already available for the market leading tablet.

Expected to land within the coming months the full Office suite for iPad is expected to be split into a series of dedicated programme applications with The Daily predicting that in order to compete with Apple’s iWork suite each app will be priced around the £6.99 mark.

Whilst little else is currently known about the apparently upcoming Office for iPad offering, The Daily has suggested the tablet centric software will be fully compatible with Microsoft’s cloud solution Office 365 allowing users to access and amend documents on the move.

Would you welcome the introduction of Office for the iPad or are you happy enough rocking the iWork suite on Apple branded tablet? Let us know via the comments box below.

HTC could get Christmas ban in Germany

HTC have withdrawn an appeal against the IPCom claim that HTC is infringing one of their patents regarding 3G technology. Now that they've withdrawn the appeal HTC could well see all their 3G products, including the HTC Sensation and HTC Desire HD, banned in Germany over the Christmas period and the foreseeable future.

The patent battle has been ongoing ever since IPCom claimed that HTC has been infringing one of their patents regarding the use of 3G technology in their mobile devices.

HTC are not the only big name manufacturer that's been suffering at the hands of IPCom with Nokia still very much trying to find a way around the patent.

HTC has become the prime target for IPCom and because IPCom are based in Germany they could well succeed in getting the injunction which would see HTC's products banned from the country.

If this comes to pass then it could have huge ramifications for the companies business in Germany, especially with Mobile World Congress 2012 due after Christmas with leaked handsets such as the HTC Ville rumoured to be on their way.

Hydroview iPhone Submarine

You’ll have to hit up Sir Richard Branson if you want to explore the depths of the ocean. You’ll also need a fair bit of cash, but often is the case that involves any activity that doesn’t take place on land. The same monetary demands apply to the HydroView, but the good news is that once you throw down it’s yours for the time to come.

Unfortunately, you’ll never be able to set foot in this submersible. Instead you’ll control it using your iOS or Android device – you lean the device in the direction you’d like to travel and it also works with a laptop. But keep in mind that this toy ain’t wireless. Instead it connects to a dock side box via a cable, which facilitates the live 1080p feed from the built-in camera replete with headlights. Total diving depth is 75 feet for the standard version, though for some extra scratch you can upgrade and get one that goes 150 feet and includes twice the battery life.

So why would you want the Hydroview? A fair question and one we kept asking ourselves. That is until we realized this handy gadget is ideal for those who own a boat and don’t want to take a dip into the ocean to investigate the vessels hull, anchor or anything else that lurks beneath the water.

Aquabotix hasn’t said when they’ll ship the Hydroview, but you can preorder it now for $2,995.

Apple’s Streaming iOS Game Service to Launch with Big Fish

Apple’s iTunes subscription service initially launched to a whole host of backlash this past February. Things have cooled down so they’re introducing the same model for games.

The subscription service for games will initially launch with publisher Big Fish. For $4.99 a month (it will jump $2 in price early next year) you’ll be able to play all of their iOS games. It’s not entirely clear if the service will stream the games each time you want to play, but one thing is for sure and that is you’ll need an Internet connection to do so. There is a strong chance you’ll download the game and have to connect to the Web for authentication purposes. Ideally they’d follow a Spotify or Rhapsody model, which requires you to reconnect every thirty days to continue playing downloaded content. At least that’s the way we’d do it for those that are traveling and don’t always have access to a WiFi connection.

Big Fish still hasn’t made an official announcement, but they did speak directly with Bloomberg news, so the service or model is legit. To access the games, or service, you’ll need to download an app, which is only available in iTunes app store, though they say there will be an Android version very soon.

Big Thodio iBox

Portable speakers are a dime a dozen. Sure, many of them sound great, but how many of them look good as well? And hence why we’re so attracted to the new iBox (remember the original?). We haven’t had an opportunity to get our mitts on one, but if it sounds as good as it looks we’re in for a serious audio treat.

Hardware wise you’re looking at dual 5-inch coaxial kevlar speakers with softdome tweeters, two 70 watt RMS amps (the original used 25 watt amps), an integrated rechargeable battery which is good for up to 12 hours of playback, Bluetooth connectivity for wireless playback, an 30-pin dock for all things iOS (except the iPad), battery indicator lights, 3.5mm input jack and distortion indicator lights hidden behind the speakers.

You can choose from a variety of wood finishes: teak, zebrawood, purpleheart, oak and unspecified custom finishes. That said, it ain’t light, weighing in at 14.5 pounds and measuring 34 x 22 x 23cm.

Much like the original, the new iBox ain’t cheap; it starts at $585. And that doesn’t even include Bluetooth connectivity or the iPod dock. You can tack on $100 and $170 respectively for those.

Apple iTV in 2012

Apple iTV is in news everywhere and according to the sources; it will be released in the mid-2012. It is heard that iTV Apple television will iPad 3 “Retina Display” panels along with HDTV screens from Sharp.

Apple’s Strategy
Just recently, Apple has bought its manufacturing equipment just to cover the hardware costs which is somewhere between $500 m and $1 billion and very soon, Apple will start its production of iPhone as well as iPad displays. The decision of owing manufacturing equipment is indeed a good thing as this will help Apple to control their manufacturing and secure supply at a comparatively lower price.

iTV Functionalities
The high costs associated with the displays were a drawback and Apple has done the right job. Though the exact functionality of iTV is not yet known but it is certain that the ulterior motive behind the iTV is to replace the traditional remote control. The icing on the cake is; the iTV has been designed integrating all the aspects of cloud-based multimedia iOS 5.0 and iCloud. Apart from that, it gives the ability to purchase as well as rent content directly from the TV set itself.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 Goes on sale in Jakarta

BlackBerry Bold 9790 was introduced a few days ago and while it wasn’t exactly a big deal over in this side of the world, things were a little different in Jakarta, Indonesia. The phone went up for sale today, and thousands of people stood in line to get their hands on the phone. What was supposed to be an orderly event where customers would be dealt with on a first come, first served basis turned into chaos with reports of people fainting and getting injured in the process.

The organizers of the launch had announced earlier this week that the first thousand customers would receive a 50% discount on the phone. Seeing how everybody loves freebies, you can guess how many people turned up for the event. But all hell broke loose when word spread out about the phone supply not being able to meet the demand of the BlackBerry consumers in line.

Fortunately around 300 police and paramilitary officers showed up and the event was shut down for safety reasons. I guess RIM can rest assured that while their grasp on the smartphone market in the US is dwindling, there are folks in other parts of the world who would brave such events to buy their phones.

Sony Ericsson U10i Aino Reviews

If the Satio is the big, brash, headline-grabbing, yet ultimately underwhelming star of the Sony Ericsson show, it’s the Aino that plays the more staid and modest yet ultimately more impressive supporting role. In other words, while the Aino doesn’t have an awe-inspiring 12.1-megapixel camera or a full touch-screen interface, it does make for a much better handset overall.

The first thing that impresses with the Aino is its build quality. It’s back and sides are finished in soft touch plastic that feels nice and doesn’t show up fingerprints and scratches half as much as the oft-preferred glossy black. The screen is also very tough so should resist scratches well. Sliding the phone open doesn’t reveal any weaknesses either thanks to a sturdy all-metal mechanism. All this strength does result in the phone weighing a fairly hefty 135g, despite relatively slim-line dimensions of 104 x 50 x 15mm, but we think it’s a small price to pay.

I also like the buttons that sit below the slide-out mechanism. Despite being quite small and low-profile, they are easy to locate and thanks to a short and sharp action they respond quickly. As a consequence, you’re always sure when you’ve pressed a button or not, which is great for typing speed and accuracy. In fact, the Aino’s numpad puts many full QWERTY and touch-screen-enabled rivals to shame.

Moving back to the screen, it’s not just its solidity that impresses, it’s also great to look at. While its resolution of 432 x 240 pixels is not the highest, it still provides ample room and can show enough detail to make browsing the web and checking email a non-too-laborious task. Moreover, due to very impressive black levels, rich colours, decent brightness, and class-leading viewing angles, it’s simply a joy to view. This makes every aspect of using the phone easier and more enjoyable, and obviously lends itself well to watching video, which the phone excels at (though you’re required to re-encode your files to a compatible resolution and format as with most handsets).

Earlier today, Microsoft said even though the development kit targets non-commercial projects; they will launch the Kinect for Windows commercial program in the first quarter of next year. This will eventually give global businesses the tools that they need to develop applications. Also, Microsoft discussed the forthcoming commercial SDK with the Financial Times wherein; they discussed about the Microsoft Pilot program which involves more than 200 companies for the use of Kinect, from advertising to automotive, healthcare to education. The beta version of Kinect for Windows SDK includes drivers, human motion tracking, APIs for raw sensor streams and more.

Modern Warfare 3 Vs Battlefield 3

For the first time, two of the legendary games “Modern Warfare 3” and “Battlefield 3” are competing against one another. Both games are compatible with contemporary gaming gadgets.

Market Share War

It is expected that both the games are going to be among the hit list of industry’s top sellers this year with “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” carrying a price tag of $60. Battlefield 3 has been just recently and it is in demand already. EA’s President Frank Gibeau has right said that it is true that we are shipping in the same boat as ‘Call of Duty’.

The Versions & Success

The success of both the games is at stake since both the companies have decided to release better quality games every year. Call of Duty along with “Modern Warfare 2” which was released in 2009 and “Black Ops” in 2010 has earned $4 billion revenue to the franchise which is pretty good. In an interview, Gibeau said Battlefield 3 has been their most successful release in the company’s 29-year history as during the first week of its release only, five million copies were sold.

Let’s see who wins the race as there are gamers who wish to spend their fortune on both the games.

Getting Twin Lens Reflex (TLR camera)

Twin lens reflex (TLR) camera has been available for more than a century but it was until the Rolleiflex was released in the end of 1920 that the camera becomes a hit until the 1960’s when the rangefinder camera took over the market.

For the cheapest yet antique version of the TLR, one can get a Lubitel camera for roughly $70. Lubitel made TLR are from Russia and dates back to as old as the 1950s. Lomo has also released a newer version of the Lubitel called the Lubitel 166+ but that would cost at least $300.

Those that are up for it could definitely get a hold of a Rolleiflex or a Rolleicord which are a bit more expensive. A working Rolleiflex would be at least $200 with the best ones costing thousands but nevertheless, expect the best quality possible with these models of TLRs.

If you are really in a budget but would like to give this camera a try, you could spend around $30 for a Recesky DIY TLR Camera but it would take time for you to assemble it properly. Nevertheless, it is a definitely as close as you can get on a budget for a TLR camera. Whatever camera it may be, having these would be nice as it will be a new experience of taking photos.

Blue Wii Available at Walmart on Black Friday (Limited Edition)

Some of you may recall that Nintendo Europe had recently announced their Blue Wii Bundle with Mario & Sonic at the impending London 2012 Olympic Games. Well, Nintendo has not made any official announcement for the United States, but Walmart will be selling the Wii exclusively for Black Friday.
This Blue Wii from Walmart will be available from Thursday, November 24 (err, Black Friday has now become Black Thursday!), for just $100. Besides, all those who arrive early enough for the sale will be able to purchase Yakuza 4 for a mere $10, Epic Mickey for $15, Batman: Arkham City for $28 and more. That is quite a deal, is it not?

The blue Wii remotes will start selling at 10:00pm on Thanksgiving Day, that is, Thursday. Your Wii bundle will include a console, matching Wii Remote Plus and a Nunchuk as well.

Well, folks, be sure to be present there on time, else you will end up losing the game, quite literally!

More about the Wii Remote

The Wii Remote, which is also known as the Wiimote, is the basic controller for Nintendo’s Wii console. The best feature of this little gadget is its motion sensing ability, which enables the user complete interaction with the screen, as also manipulation and navigation of items on the screen, by way of gesture recognition. The user can also employ pointing by way of using the optical sensor and the already present accelerometer.

The Nunchuk

The Nunchuk, an extra attachment available with the Wii, brings with it features similar to a gamepad controller.

Facebook Phone - HTC Buffy

Facebook is working hard with HTC to release a phone which will entirely be used for social networking purposes – Buffy.

Facebook following Other Biggies

This phone is going to be a lot different from the entire previous Facebook phone. But customers will have to wait around 12 to 18 months to get their hands on this gadget. As Amazon and Barnes & Noble have recently created tablets which are running customized versions of Google’s Android, this is one reason Facebook is adopting a similar strategy.

USP

Farmville and Poker game lovers are going to love this phone since players will be able to play the games directly from the Facebook app. The USP of this phone is users will no longer have to download apps separately from Facebook as this phone will have all the apps in-built. Named as “Buffy”, the phone will serve all the Facebook apps via HTML5 support.

In an interview with the Facebook spokesperson, he said “Our mobile strategy is simple and what we believe is every single mobile device is better if it is designed to be social”. We are dealing with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers all across the globe so as to bring powerful social experience.

Galaxy Tab 10.1N to be released in Germany

Previously, the German court published a ruling stated that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was banned from the German market. This is due to its similarities in design with its tough competitor, the iPad 2. The court order certainly punched a hole in Samsung as Germany is considered one of the biggest mobile markets in the region and it was essential for Samsung to get a hold in its market. To counter the court order, Samsung released another 10.1 inch tablet called the Galaxy Tab 10.1N.

It sports a metal bezel which covers the edge of the device instead of the usual black. In addition to that, the speaker of the device was also repositioned to a different place but its insides remain the same as compared with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It sports a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor with 1GB worth of RAM. Its 7000mAh battery will leave the tablet pumping with power for a long time.

With this being done, Samsung will be able to go into the tablet market in Germany. Given the success of its past devices, the company expects a lot of sales for this particular tablet of theirs. Only time will tell the result of the Galaxy Tab 10.1N.

The Run campaign is '2 hours long'

US site Game Trailers is one such critic to point to the surprisingly short single-player length, but reassures fans "that may sound short but keep in mind that time doesn't include cut-scenes, retries or menus."

EA meanwhile has contacted CVG to counter that the single-player campaign in Need for Speed The Run should take most players around six hours to complete and also pointed out that once you add in the Challenge Series, Autolog and Multiplayer, game play is unlimited.

Need for Speed: The Run hits North American shops today, with the official UK release due this Friday, November 18.

Reviews have been mixed, with scores ranging fro 8.5's to much lower 5/10's, although most seem to agree that The Run won't provide quite as many hours of entertainment as previous NFS games.

One aspect of the racer that does look to provide hours of entertainment is the excellent Challenge Series mode, which is a bit like Hot Pursuit with Frostbite visuals. Read our hands-on for more.

ViewSonic’s ViewPad 7x could be released in time for Christmas

Looking to treat yourself or a loved one to a new tablet come for Christmas? Well it seems like ViewSonic Germany has revealed that the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x will be available come early December in time for the Christmas holiday.

We have reported in the past that the tablet was scheduled for an October launch, but as we can see that’s hardly the case. In fact the ViewPad 7x was only seen at the FCC early October therefore putting it at a December launch seems about right. Now don’t expect it to be a fancy tablet that will replace your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Motorola Xoom or iPad just yet.

In terms of hardware we’re looking at a 7” 1024×600 display with a dual-core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, a 5MP/2MP rear/front-facing camera, 8GB of internal memory and will run on Android’s Honeycomb 3.2. The last we checked its price was expected to be around $379 which is close to $200 more than Amazon’s Kindle Fire. It will be interesting to see if the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x will be able to give Amazon’s Kindle Fire a run for its money.

The Bridge universal remote control to rule them all

Universal remote controls? Don’t you think that this moniker is rather misleading, as they can’t really control everything that you want or have around the home? Well, trust enterprising folk to take a look at Kickstarter as the apt place to, well, kickstart their dreams. Case in point, the Bridge universal remote control from Convergence Technologies of New York. This concept is waiting for $50,000 in funds in order to be realized in the real world.

The amount of money requested is to fund the development of the relevant software, not to mention manufacturing as well as distribution costs of the remote. On paper and in theory, as with most of the other ideas, it seems to be foolproof – but hopefully, should the amount of money be raised, Convergence Technologies would be as good as their word. It seems that the Bridge is able to control RF devices such as the Boxee Box amongst numerous others, where the final product will retail for less than a Benjamin. If you think the Bridge has a chance, then $10 will net you a pin, while $20 returns a t-shirt, with $65 getting you one of the first units off the production line. The buttons do not seem to nice to press on, as though it was one of the entry level Nokia featurephones of old.

Google Search for iPad updated

Google has just announced the release of an updated version of Google Search app for the iPad. The app gets a user interface overhaul, which makes it more interactive, more visual and efficient for searching. First of all, the speed of the app has improved with the availability of Google Instant when searching, users now get a new, slide-in pane layered over the search results that lets them view search results while their web pages are loading as well as easily switch back and forth between the results and the web page.

Images are now shown on a new image carousel which gives a nice preview of images using most of the iPad’s display, and a visual search history view lets users easily go through their previous searches without having to retype anything. Instant Previews are also available, letting users save time by checking out a preview before loading the website, and there are now tools for searching within a page as well as for adding a +1 to your favorite sites.

Lastly, there are a whole bunch of new shortcuts for accessing your favorite Google apps and services in the new Apps menu. Head over to the Apple App Store now to download the latest version of Google Search for your iPad.

LG and Samsung could debut 55″ OLED displays next year

Looking forward to some giant OLED displays next year? Well there have been reports that display manufacturers, LG and Samsung, are set to debut 55” OLED displays during CES 2012. To further corroborate this possibility, LG Display’s CEO Kwon Young-soo told reporters back in July that the company was shifting development away from smaller and unprofitable OLED displays to 55” models.

OLED displays tend to produce fantastic colors and use low amounts of power, however producing them does not come cheap. What this translates to for us consumers is that unless both LG and Samsung have come up with a way to manufacture 55” OLED displays cheaply, expect to pay a king’s ransom for these new displays, especially since LG’s 2010 15” OLED display was already going for $2,500. So if you were planning to get a nice new display for 2012, you better start saving.

Treat Yourself to an Android Ice Cream Sandwich

The Android OS treats keep on coming. After a year or so of Honeycomb tweaks, Google has finally unveiled the specifics of their new Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, officially dubbed Android 4.0. The previous evolutionary stages of Android have been slow and steady shifts into a more streamlined system, better imitative of it’s main competitor iOS, but ICS is introducing innovation as much as adjustment. The new Android operating system will make its debut on Google’s latest phone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, sometime in November, with additional models and even prepaid phones carrying the OS being released sometime after the start of the new year

New aspects of Android include:

NEW AND IMPROVED CAMERA ATTRIBUTES

The Android camera and camcorder apps are set to see some serious changes. Now, users can use the camera as a face recognition lock for their devices. They can also take panoramic portraits and snap multiple shots at once. With the camcorder, multiple video chatterers standing at different focal lengths will be focused in on independently, depending on who is doing the talking.

TABLET INSPIRATIONS

Ice Cream Sandwich will be the first version of Android designed to work for both smartphones and tablet computers. What this means is that you are essentially getting a tablet OS put onto your cell phone. Widgets can be manipulated with a wider range of customization, while icon size can be adjusted as well. Those with matching Android smartphones and tablets carrying ICS will experience a much more streamlined transition of data and media.

ANDROID BEAM

The most exciting newfangled feature is Android Beam, which allows two Android-powered devices to exchange contact information, media, and even certain apps, just by hovering the devices near one another. The transitional data even includes maps and directions. It’s an addition that’s certain to impress new and experienced Android users alike.

Just in time for the holiday season, Google is about to unleash a whole bunch of goodies onto mobile device users. The sample tastes sure make getting the update a tempting proposition, but whether consumers can handle the extra cash involved in getting a new device to handle the calories remains to be seen.

Tiny USB Stick Brings Android to PCs, TVs

Google has made no secret about its plans for Android. Smartphones and tablets are just the beginning — the company wants Android everywhere. And thanks to FXI Technologies’ Cotton Candy USB device, we may not have to wait long to see Android on more than just our mobile devices.

FXI essentially built an ultra-lean computer inside a small USB stick. Stick it into any device that supports USB storage, and Cotton Candy will register as a USB drive. From there, you can run the Android OS in a secure environment inside your desktop, courtesy of a Windows/OSX/Linux-compatible virtualization client embedded in the device.

Stick Cotton Candy into a computer, and Android will appear in a virtualized window on your desktop. But get this: The USB key also features an HDMI connector. This way, you can connect the stick to your TV and use Android on the big screen (though you’ll need some kind of secondary input device, like a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo, to get anything done.)

Cotton Candy is far more than just Android on a stick. Under its Hot Wheels-sized hood, the device sports a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A9-based processor (the same basic processor architecture you’ll find in the fastest chips from Apple and Nvidia), as well as ARM’s quad-core Mali GPU and 1GB of RAM. It’s an impressive laundry list of specs, and seems more than capable of fueling Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, the version of the OS that comes on the device.

From TVs to car stereo head units to refrigerators and lighting fixtures, it seems no piece of consumer electronics is out of Android’s reach. And, ultimately, getting Android on as many devices as possible gets Google’s search bar and services onto multitudinous screens beyond the desktop environment. This potentially means more ads served, and more revenue for the search company’s core business.

Android has already appeared is a small number of refrigerators, TVs and automobiles, and if widely adopted in the greater gadgetsphere, app-makers could make better, appliance-specific Android apps.

For now, the Cotton Candy USB stick is a stopgap item — a small taste of what Android can be before it bursts outside its mobile boundaries. Unfortunately, since it’s not a proper Android device per se — i.e., it doesn’t comply with enough of Google’s requirements to be considered “official” — you’ll be unable to access the Android Market from the device. Sideloading is still an option, though, so you won’t be left completely app-less.

Expect Cotton Candy to pop up for less than $200 around mid-2012.

ASUS and Dell not exiting the tablet business

On Thursday, the folks over at DigiTimes reported that companies like ASUS, Acer and Dell were looking to retreat from the tablet business due to the OEMs struggling to make a dent in Apple’s share of the tablet market and the arrival of low cost tablets like the Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet. Well, two of the companies decided to set the story straight by responding to those rumors. ASUS’ spokes man Gary Key was quoted as saying, “As usual, the rumors and reports from Digitimes are incorrect. Asus is not exiting the Android tablet business.” Let’s not forget that the company has the Transformer Prime tablet slated for December, so it seemed like a pretty odd rumor in the first place.

A Dell spokesman also said that the company didn’t have any plans to exit the business either, while an Acer representative wasn’t available for comment. So for those of you who were worried about your favorite company exiting the tablet business, fret not. However it is noted that the manufacturers could be scaling back on resources for Android tablets to focus on Windows 8 tablets instead. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
